Absolutely the Toughest Handcycle Tour on the Planet! Declared too tough for the average handcyclist, we have relented and added an extra day to make the tour more enjoyable. Yes thats right it is 6 days and 535km long (7 days and 557km if you include the 42km OCC street race the day before the tour starts). This event promises to be the ultimate handcycle tour. You will ride over at least 3 well known mountain passes, one of which strikes fear into the hearts of most regular cyclists, and plenty of other good climbs as well. In fact you climb over 4,100m in the six days! The tour is not a timed event, its a fully supported training ride through some of the most diverse and spectacular scenery South Africa has to offer. The average distance you ride per day is 85km, and we have designated rest stops each day where you can rest and refill water-bottles etc. There is no official start time and no cut-off time you ride at your own pace and enjoy the scenery. All we ask is that if you are one of the slower riders, you leave earlier than the faster guys so we dont get strung out over too long a distance. Your kit bags and wheelchair/crutches will be transported for you en route by our support vehicles. The tour provides 3 meals a day (except for the first and last days) and bottled water en route, so all your needs are catered for just bring along some money to cover incidentals, energy drinks and snacks each day. (Note: all ordered drinks and alcoholic beverages are for your own account); all you have to worry about is riding your bike! We stay mostly in 3-star, shared accommodation in B&Bs;, hotels and guest lodges along the way. Some of the overnight stops offer laundry facilities, and most of them have swimming pools be sure to bring a swimming costume and towel. 2014 is the seventh year we are running this most successful tour, and every year we tweak the route ever so slightly to improve it. Some awesome changes for 2014 dont miss out! Entries for 2014 will be open on 1st July 2013 and close on 31st December 2013. For more information, contact the organizers on info@ghrc.co.za
NB. This tour is so tough that we require a doctors certificate of competence for first-time participants. This is a health precaution. |
